Bridge crossings are the one real bottleneck. The Broadway, University, Idylwyld and Circle Drive bridges carry traffic across the South Saskatchewan River, and a commute that avoids a bridge at peak hours is usually noticeably faster than one that needs to cross.
Newer suburbs on the city's edge, like Brighton, Evergreen and Aspen Ridge, add distance to downtown but often avoid the bridge bottleneck entirely depending on where you work, while central neighbourhoods like Nutana or Riversdale trade a longer drive for a shorter one with more crossing options.
