Is military retirement pay taxed in Saskatoon?

Military retirement pay is taxable income in Canada, assessed the same as most other pension income, and Saskatoon's municipal property tax has nothing to do with it. The Canada Revenue Agency taxes a military pension at your marginal federal and provincial rate, reported the same way as any other pension on your annual return.

The one meaningful carve-out is a disability pension paid through Veterans Affairs Canada, which is non-taxable, unlike a standard service pension. Whether a specific payment falls into the taxable or non-taxable category depends on which program it comes from, not on where in Canada you live.

None of this touches your Saskatoon property tax bill, which is calculated separately by the City of Saskatoon from your home's assessed value, at 80 percent of that value under provincial rules, regardless of your income source or retirement status.

If you are retiring in Saskatoon and weighing whether to downsize, a tax professional can confirm your specific income picture, and a market valuation can confirm what the house itself is worth. Get your hand-reviewed valuation from Joel Dyck.
